History of the Crop Walk
George Sturgeon of Bismarck, ND, inspired his youth group to help people globally attain food and water. In 1969, teens and young adults pioneered the first Walk raising funds for families around the world through Lutheran World Relief and Church World Service. Word spread, sparking interest across the nation. In York, PA, Rev. Bill Sowers’ congregation was already engaged in the CWS “Friendship Farms” initiative where farmers volunteered a portion of their produce for families in need. Rev. Bill encouraged them to combine the crop initiative with a fundraising walk and in 1970 the CROP Hunger Walk was born. It is now America’s main hunger walk.
